Fender's breakup sound isn't bad or lacking by any means, just maybe less distinctive as far as it having it's own character as the Vox does, due to it's high-mid frequency boost. If you're looking to really drive the amp and take advantage of it's gain and breakup, Vox is a bit more distinctive in character than Fender. Both Vox and Fender have solid state and amps valves on hand. The Vox amps are best suited for rock because they distort at lower volumes and have a grittier and crunchier tone with a mid range that is ideal for rock bands. Really though, both style amps aren't really that far apart in sound, as much as say, a Triple Rectum Fryer vs either a Vox or a Fender. Because they have more room, fender amps are typically preferable to Vox amps for clean tone. Jangle-y indie rockers and brit invasion style guys love 'em. They aren't that far from Fender sounds, but they compress a bit sooner and kind of boost the upper mids/treble frequencies by nature. My Super Reverb 4x10 gets a lot louder, but the overdrive is not great without the help of a pedal, e.g., a Klon or a TIM. My Deluxe Reverb simply cant keep up with my JMJ, clean or overdriven. If you are playing with a rock drummer, without a mic, that is a notable difference. That being said, Vox amps generally do clean sounds very well, and some Fender amps have can do lot of gain. An AC-30 2x12 is a lot louder than a Deluxe Reverb 1x12. Many Fender amps are renowned for their clean sound (Reverb series) while Vox is renowned for the sparkly top boost sound. The former comes with multiple built-in FX options, but only the latter has additional functions. In my experience, Fender and Vox sound quite different. While the Vox amp is more of a traditional model, the Fender Mustang Micro boasts more advanced features. They're also regarded for their distinctive spring reverb. Although both the Fender Mustang Micro and Vox are stellar options, pick the one that suits your taste and budget the best. But I guess when people think of the Fender amp sound, they're mostly thinking of the Deluxe and Twin Reverb style amps, which is a crisp, full sparkly clean sound that gets more "fat" and compressed as it overdrives. The VT-40x has some really nice 60s crunch and heavy distortion. It seems to be 'fuller' with greater a greater spectrum of trem and bass ranges. Whoever the manufacturer Johnson, Crate, Peavey, Fender, or Line 6 (who make the Flextone II shown in close-up below) the legends ringed around the amp. Fender has made a LOT of different types of amps over the years, including the Bassman in the fifties, which is what the first Marshall circuits were based on. In my opinion, the Katana does the cleans better and the overall sound coming out is more appealing to my tastes.
